Hello my name is Larry Jeffus and I would like to thank you for visiting my website.  Let me tell you a little about myself and my family.

The Jeffus family settled here in East Texas in 1820 and received a land grant from Spain for a league of land near Deport Texas.  (A league is a Spanish unit of measure and it is equivalent to about 4,428.4 acres.)

My mother’s family (Herren) settled in Maxburg Iowa in the mid 1800’s.  Most of her side of the family still lives in that area.  Mom’s parents were farmers and moved from Iowa to Presho, South Decoda and finally settled in Springdale, Arkansas, as they were trying to find a suitable place to farm during the dust bowl.

My mother was a registered nurse, and my father was an electrical engineer.  Dad worked with the military which required our moving frequently.  I attended 10 different schools in 10 different states before graduating .

There were many teachers in my family who kept some great journals.  That has made it possible for us to trace our heritage back to the 4 original Jeffus brothers who immigrated to the New World from Scotland before the American Revolution.  We have copies of the ship’s manifest listing their names.  We also have from the Library of Congress copies of their service records from the Revolutionary War.

It was not suprising that I went into education with such a long family history in education.  I retired after 35 years of teaching in the classroom but have continued to teach in industry, so I now have been teaching for more than 40 years. I started teaching swimming, rowing, canoeing and life saving for the 4 summers while I was in high school at Camp Charles (a Boy Scout summer camp in Eastern North Carolina.)

Before graduating from the University of Tennessee, I was asked to be a permanent substitute teacher at a local Junior High School.  The shop teacher had a terminal illness, so I took his place; I’ve been teaching every since.

I have often said teaching was a great hobby, but I had to do something else to make a living for my family so I could enjoy that hobby.  I learned to weld at New Bern High School and, by the time I was a Senior, I was welding 30+ hours a week at a local shipyard.  Through our my teaching career, I took full time welding jobs during the summer and often worked part-time welding and construction jobs during the school year.

I truly love teaching and I found writing textbooks was a way of extending my teaching. My first textbook Safety for Welders was printed in 1978 and with new books, revisions, lab manuals, instructors guides etc, I have now completed over 200 works.
